Boehm Chapel

Boehm Chapel, located in Willow Street, PA. Lancaster Co., is a historical 18th century church that was in need of a new heating and air conditioning system that would be whisper quiet, energy efficient, comfortable on all levels with even temperatures through-out the building especially the mezzanine.

An extensive heat evaluation was performed with 50 people in the building. We picked a Ruud horizontal furnace fired by L.P. gas at 70,000 btu and added 2 tons of cooling to this, placing the floor registers at a stratigic locations. This allows even heat and air conditioning through-out the first floor. The duct system was designed with a .05 in. wc. static for a whisper quiet operation. Next there was the problem with air stratification under the mezzanine, so 2 chases were build for return air with high and low return air filter grills and finished to look to match the existing plaster.

The next step was to install 4 tons of cooling to solve the cooling load in the mezzanine without creating drafts for the persons seated. We installed 8 -12x12 - 3 directional ceiling registers along with 2 filter grills and an air handler went in the attic.

The next hurdle was to bring the temperatures up and down automatically. Since there was no set schedule and we didn't want everyone to have access to the thermostats it had to be user friendly.

We used 2 Honeywell Th8000 thermostats with remote sensors and programmed them to run continuous fans in the occupied mode. Along with this we installed an interlocking relay and connected it with an outside light, so when the outside light was turned on the heat and or air conditioning operated at a predetermined set point and if someone forgot to turn it off, the light stayed on as a reminder and could be seen from the parking lot. In the off setting the heat reverted back to a night thermostat and the cooling just turned off.
